He helps to write up town correspondence for delivery on arrival of mails, besides his other duties of attending the receipt of all correspondence, parcels, &c brought to the Post Office by Chinese messengers.
The mail man has 10 years' service and draws $10 per month. This man has applied personally to me for an increase of pay. He is really deserving of a rise, as the whole of the despatching and taking deliveries of mails from steamers and hongs is done by him. His intimate knowledge of the Customs clearance of steamers, the berths of the steamers of the various lines that ply here, and the hours of arrival and despatch of the riverine boats, makes him indispensable to this office.
